Safe and Secure Online - Cybersecurity Awareness for Kids

The Safe and Secure Online (SSO) Education Resources introduces the Center for Cyber Safety and Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to making the cyber world safer for everyone through educational programs, scholarships, and research. The SSO initiative provides engaging resources to teach internet safety best practices to children in classrooms, libraries, and learning labs.

Key features include:

  • Educator’s Kit: A comprehensive package containing cartoons, posters, activity books, stickers, and more, designed to make cyber safety lessons fun and memorable.

  • Cyber Safe Lessons: Six interactive lessons to address critical topics:

    1. Privacy: Protecting personal information online.

    2. Safe Posting: Understanding the risks of sharing on social media.

    3. Cyberbullying: Recognizing and preventing online bullying.

    4. Viruses: Avoiding risks from unknown email attachments.

    5. Image Control/Sexting: Managing inappropriate image sharing and its consequences.

    6. Downloading: Making safe choices when downloading content online.

The study of children in grades 4-8, underscores the urgent need for quality cyber safety education:

  • 62% visited adult websites after a search.

  • 49% are online at 11pm or later on school nights.

  • 40% have chatted online with strangers.

  • 21% watch adult programming online.

  • 11% met a stranger in person after meeting online.
